September 29 - 18:00 - 21:00
Film screening and talk with production and costume designer of the film Ekaterina Gerasimova-Bossky.
Alexei Uchitel attracted attention all over the world as director of the notorious film “Matilda” which is based on the love story of Nikolai Romanov, heir to the Russian throne, and Matilda Kshesinskaya ballerina of the Imperial Theatre. “Matilda” was so incendiary that the filmmakers and cinemas received threats and there were even cases of arson.
The mania of Giselle” is Uchitel’s much earlier film, also about a ballerina. It is the real life drama of the rise and fall of great Russian ballerina Olga Spesivtseva. Nicknamed “Red Giselle” by her contemporaries, the film traces her dizzying career from sensational breakthrough in 1924 to catastrophe in 1942. Star of the Imperial Theatres and Palais Garnier, partner of Nijinsky, Dolin and Lifar, friends with Diaghilev and Balanchine, she nevertheless died abandoned in a suburban New York nursing home in 1991 at the age of 96. We are privileged that Ekaterina Gerasimova-Bossky, who was production and costume designer of this film at the Lenfilm Studio, will be introducing our screening.
